You can apply a parameterized template to edge devices during activation.

# Additional Details

- While applying a parameterized template during activation of an edge device, you can set the variables that affect devices.
- You are asked to supply variables during the activation request confirmation.
- The template variables are changed using the JSON-path and the variable values, and then sent to the edge device using the existing API.

# Step 1: Create a Basic Activation Configuration with Activation Template(s) in Manufacturing Connect

See Step 1-6 of [Set Up an Activation Config](docId\:JaNY4AoXq0a3a22W6O3MT). For Step 2, select a *Parameterized Template*.

# Step 2: Create an Activation Request in Manufacturing Connect Edge

See [Activate an Edge Device](docId\:XYBwui7dZIU41fGxmzfu6).

# Step 3: Approve the Activation Request in Manufacturing Connect

See the **Approve **option of [Activation Requests](docId\:TAQ8nIbGKIQ8V79J8Pe5V).

# Step 4: Set Variables in Manufacturing Connect

Once **Approved, **the* Set Variables* dialog box appears. Enter values for the variables in each variable field, and then click **Apply**.

The Stage Activation icon under Status shows a green check mark, and then the Stage Provision icon under Status shows a green check mark.

The activation for the device is complete.

# Step 5: Verify Template Parameters are Applied to an Edge Device in Manufacturing Connect Edge

There are many types of possible variables. The following verification procedure is an example.

**To verify template parameters are applied to an edge device in Manufacturing Connect Edge:**

1. From another browser tab, log in to Manufacturing Connect Edge.
2. From the Navigation panel, select **DeviceHub**.
 The Edge Devices pane appears.
3. Select the device for which the template was applied and ensure that the variables entered in the** Set Variables** dialog box appear correctly.
**Example**: If `device_name `is a variable, make sure that the name for the device is correct. In this case, `PLC1`.
