ESXi ISO (VMWare vSphere 7.0.3.01400)

18min

You can install Manufacturing Connect Edge on a virtual machine (VM) using the ESXi Hypervisor (VMWare vSphere 7.0.3.01400) with an ISO file.

A typical Manufacturing Connect Edge virtual file for ESXi deployment adheres to a naming convention as follows: <product>-std_3.1.5.0-amd64.iso.

Before You Begin

  • Prepare your environment for running virtualization by using VMWare ESXi - Hypervisor.
    • Review Verified VM Versions and confirm the correct version to download. See VMWare.
    • The virtual machine will run on the same physical network card as the host environment. To ensure that the device can communicate with data sources such as PLC, DCS or CNC and can be accessed through the Web UI, make sure that communication can be established.
  • Adjust the system clock for the host environment prior to installing Manufacturing Connect Edge. UTC is recommended. The 15-day trial period may be rejected and invalidated by the license server if the system clock is not adjusted. If this happens, contact your Litmus representative.
  • Obtain a valid file in the ISO format. You can download it from Manufacturing Connect (MC) > Edge Management > Downloads. Alternatively, you can obtain an ISO file from Litmus.

To install Manufacturing Connect Edge on VMWare vSphere 7.0.3.01400, you will need to do the following.

  • Step 1: Create a Virtual Machine
  • Step 2: Run Operating System Installer
  • Step 3: Disable Startup of ISO File
  • Step 4: Start Manufacturing Connect Edge
  • Step 5: Log in to Manufacturing Connect Edge

To jump to a specific section, refer to the Table of Contents on the right side and click the corresponding step.

Step 1: Create a Virtual Machine

You will first need to create the virtual machine that will run Manufacturing Connect Edge.

To install the ESXi-Hypervisor virtual machine:

  1. Start the VMware (VMWare vSphere 7.0.3.01400) application.
  2. For the folder you want to add the virtual machine to, right-click the folder name and select New Virtual Machine...

Select Name and Folder

Enter a name for the virtual machine and review/update the location of the virtual machine.

Select Compute Resource

Select the destination compute resource for the virtual machine deployment.

Select Storage

Select where the configuration and disk files for the virtual machine will be stored. Ensure that there is at least 50 GB of free capacity.

Select Compatibility

Select compatibility for this virtual machine depending on the hosts in your environment. Your selection must be compatible with your ESXi version Guest OS family (Linux).

Select Guest OS

Select the Guest OS that will be installed on the virtual machine.

  • Guest OS family: The operating system is based on Linux.
  • Guest OS version: The kernel used for the operating system is a 64-bit Yocto Kernel.

Customize Hardware

Configure the parameters for the virtual machine.

Virtual Hardware

From the Virtual Hardware tab, configure the following parameters.

Document image

  • CPU: The recommended number of CPUs is 4. You can allocate more depending on the setup and requirements of your environment.
  • Memory: The recommended amount of memory is 8 GB, and the minimum is 2048 MB. You can allocate more depending on the setup and requirements of your environment.
  • New Hard disk: The recommended hard disk capacity is 25 GB, and the minimum is 16 GB. Configuring 16 GB provides the VM with about 2 GB data storage. You can allocate more depending on the setup and requirements of your environment.
  • New Network: Configure the appropriate network for the VM to connect to. Select the checkbox to connect to the network when the VM powers up.

Notes:

  • By default, VMs are defined with two network cards. They are configured for the first network card as a Bridged Network and the second network card as NAT.
  • Based on the ESXi host environment, if a NAT network exists, a second network adapter must be added and set to NAT.
  • New CD/DVD Drive: Select Datastore ISO File and choose the ISO file. Select the checkbox to load the ISO file the first time the VM powers up. After Manufacturing Connect Edge is installed and running, you will need to unselect the checkbox.

You can expand each section and make additional configurations depending on the requirements of your environment.

VM Options

Click the VM Options tab, open the Boot Options section, and unselect Secure Boot Enabled checkbox.

Step 2: Run Operating System Installer

You will run the Operating System installer that will install Manufacturing Connect Edge.

Notes:

  • During the installation, the progress bar may decrease at times due to partitioning.
  • The time to complete the installation is based on the size of the hard disk drive. Large disk drives will cause the installation to take longer to partition the disk and therefore longer to complete setting up the virtual machine.

To run the Operating System installer:

  1. Select the VM from the navigation menu and click the Play icon to power up the VM.
