Apply a New Password Policy to a Manufacturing Connect Edge Device

In this use case, you will create a new password policy in Manufacturing Connect. Then you will apply it to a Manufacturing Connect Edge (MC Edge) device and try to change the password to confirm it adheres to the new password policy.

Before You Begin

If you haven't yet connected your Manufacturing Connect Edge instance to Manufacturing Connect, see Activate an Edge Device.

Step 1: Create a New Password Policy in Manufacturing Connect

In this step, you will create a new password policy in Manufacturing Connect. The created policy will be later applied to an MC Edge instance.

To create a new password policy:

  1. Log in to Manufacturing Connect.
  2. From the navigation panel, select Admin Console.
  3. From the Admin Console navigation panel, select Policies.
  4. Expand the Default password policy section and click Copy. The Create Password Policy dialog appears.
  5. In the Policy Name field, enter New Password Policy.
  6. In the Description field, enter a description.
  7. Click Save.
  8. Click the created New Password Policy box. The password policy box expands with additional fields.
  9. For the following fields, enter the following details:
    • Minimum password length: 8
    • Maximum password length: 16
    • Auto generated password length: 12
    • Minimum uppercase characters: 1
    • Minimum lowercase characters: 3
    • Minimum number of digits: 1
    • Special characters: ~!@
    • Minimum special characters: 1

Step 2: Apply the Created Policy to an MC Edge in Manufacturing Connect

From the previous step's created policy, you will then apply the policy settings to a selected MC Edge instance.

To apply the password policy to an MC Edge instance:

  1. Log in to Manufacturing Connect.
  2. From the navigation panel, select Edge Management. The Edge Devices pane appears.
  3. Click an edge device ID link in the Edge Devices pane. The selected Edge Device Details page open with the Info tab.
  4. Click the Policy tab.
  5. From the Selected Policy dropdown menu, select the created New Password Policy from Step 1.
  6. Click Save.
    • If successful, the bottom right corner will display Policy for device saved.
    • If unsuccessful, the MC Edge's current password does not adhere to the password policy as indicated by New Password Policy.

Step 3: Confirm Received Policy Settings Change in MC Edge

After applying a password policy, you will then access the MC Edge instance that just received the policy. From there, you will then confirm the MC Edge instance has successfully received the password policy's settings.

To confirm the received password policy changes:

  1. Log in to Manufacturing Connect Edge.
  2. From the navigation panel, navigate to System > Policy Management. The Policy Management pane appears.
  3. From the Password Policy section, you can see the received password policy.

Step 4: Attempt to Change MC Edge Password to Verify Password Policy

Finally, after receiving the password policy settings, you will attempt to change the password of the MC Edge instance to confirm the password policy settings.

To attempt to change the MC Edge instance password:

  1. Log in to Manufacturing Connect Edge.
  2. Click your user icon in the top-right corner and select User Profile.
  3. In the New Password and Confirm New Password field, enter a password that goes against New Password Policy. You will see the new requirements being listed.
